Sailfish Fall in Penalties of SSC Championship

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team fell to No. 2 ranked Lynn University in the finals of the Sunshine State Conference tournament this afternoon. After going into the shootout tied 2-2, the No. 7 ranked Sailfish lost the penalty shootout 4-2 to drop their record to 14-2-3.

PBA was looking to get revenge on Lynn from the 3-1 defeat the Knights handed the Sailfish in the regular season, and the 'Fish looked the better team throughout the first half. The Sailfish controlled the majority of the possession in the first half and they were clinical with their finishing when opportunities were created. The first good chance for either team came in the 22nd minute when Claudio Rivadeneira got behind the defense and Mathius Tonon found him with a ball over the top. Rivadeneira played the ball around charging keeper Konstantin Fuhry and put the ball into the empty net for the 1-0 lead. It was evident Lynn was growing frustrated having to chase the possession that the Sailfish were able to hold and PBA doubled its lead in the 35th minute. The bench of the Sailfish has been particularly strong of late and two substitutes connected for the second goal as Greg Pagni's cross was finished off on a one time shot by Simone Pacielli.

The Sailfish went into the half looking like the dominate team up two goals and holding Lynn without any quality scoring opportunities in the first half. Whatever halftime adjustments the Knights made paid off quickly in the second half as Lukas Ostermann  scored off a cross in the 47th minute. Lynn took control of the game the first 25 minutes in the second half forcing the Sailfish to defend and limit the PBA possession. In the 64th minute, Levin Sandman volleyed home a cross from the right-wing and tied the game 2-2.

After the two goals, PBA was able to stem the Lynn momentum and get back to the ball control game that was successful in the first half. PBA outshot the Knights 13-12 overall in the back and forth game and with neither side able to break through for the game-winning goal, the two teams went into overtime. The Sailfish had the best opportunity in the overtime period but Marc Hebbeker was unable to put his shot from the right side of the box on target. Lynn had a free-kick dangerously on the edge of the box in the closing minute of overtime, but their shot attempt never threatened keeper Patrick Nettekoven who made two saves in the game.

The two sides went to penalties in last year's NCAA South Region when Lynn ended the Sailfish season, and unfortunately for the 'Fish the result of today's shootout went the same way. Both Thomas Spear and Blake Barribeau struck the frame of the goal to start the shootout for the Sailfish, and Lynn was able to execute, finding the corner on all four of their opportunities to win the shootout 4-2. With the win, Lynn wins the SSC regular and postseason titles in the same year, which the Sailfish were able to accomplish last season.

Up next for PBA is the NCAA Regional Tournament. The Sailfish will learn their fate Monday night after the selection committee makes their picks for postseason play.
