Sailfish Control Game In Win Against Eckerd

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic University men's soccer team defeated SSC opponent Eckerd College tonight at the Rinker Athletic Campus. The 4-2 victory for the No. 22 ranked Sailfish moves PBA to 10-2-2 on the season and 8-0 in home games.

PBA came into tonight's matchup with a ten-match win streak against the Tritons of Eckerd College, and the Sailfish looked to be on their way to another when Cadu Cusatis got the ball on the edge of the box from Claudio Rivadeneira in the 7th minute. Cusatis was able to get around his defender and his shot beat Eckerd keeper David Ormiston and put the 'Fish up 1-0. Cusatis has been on an incredible run of form scoring seven goals in his last six games entering the game tonight. In the 16th minute, Cusatis looked dangerous once again when he received the ball in a similar position in the left side of the box. His left-footed shot found the right corner of the net giving PBA a 2-0 lead. The Sailfish looked strong and controlled the play throughout the first half, outshooting the Tritons 12-1.

In the second half, PBA continued to control the majority of the ball forcing Eckerd to commit more men forward. In the 58th minute, the Tritons had their chance to get back into the game on a penalty kick from a Sailfish handball in the box, however, SSC leading goalscorer Agustin Pertusso missed the net for Eckerd to keep the score at 2-0. Eckerd keeper Orminston was called on to keep his team in the game throughout the match making ten saves. In the 72nd minute, Eckerd's Pedro Galvao played a ball from outside the right side of the box that appeared to be a cross but his ball found the top corner of the net to get the Tritons on the board.

PBA was able to respond within three minutes when Thomas Spear rose above the defense on a long throw-in from Blake Barribeau and his header extended the lead back to two goals. The defender now has three goals on the season and has scored in two consecutive matches. With nine minutes remaining in the game, senior midfielder Gian Scalise went down on the field in a scary injury that forced him to be stretchered off the field.

The players had to get back into the game mentally and physically after the long break and seeing their teammate taken off the field, and only a minute later Eckerds Pertusoo scored on a long shot from outside the box that beat keeper Patrick Nettekoven. Once again the Sailfish were able to respond quickly to a Tritons goal when on senior night, two seniors connected on a goal to make the scoreline 4-2 and put the game away. Guillermo Deal played a corner into the box in the 86th minute and midfielder Jack Burrows used his size to rise above defenders and head home his first goal of the season.

PBA outshot the Tritons 27-8 and controlled 65 percent of the possession in the match. The victory strengthens PBA's position in the SSC standings where they currently sit in third place. Up next, the 'Fish have a massive road contest against No. 7 ranked, and second in the SSC standings, Florida Tech on Oct. 30. With a win in that game, PBA has the chance to move into second place in the conference.
