DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—The women's soccer team dropped its contest with the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Eagles Wednesday night by a final score of 3-1. Following the loss, Palm Beach Atlantic moved to 6-6 (2-5 SSC) on the year.
Embry-Riddle kept the majority of the possession in the opening minutes, pinning the Sailfish in their defensive third and limiting PBA's opportunities.
Despite the lack of early chances, Kianna Magner nearly put Palm Beach Atlantic up in the 18th minute. The senior placed a header on goal off the first corner of the match for PBA, but the ball was cleared off the goal line. Karina Williams, who took the set piece, then fired another shot that was kept out by the ERAU defense, as well.
Just three minutes after the Sailfish's initial chance, the Eagles got on the board thanks to a penalty when a shot struck a defender's hand as it was headed toward goal.
Embry-Riddle (7-3, 5-1 SSC) then quickly doubled its lead with another tally in the 27th minute.
ERAU, who out-shot PBA 8-2 in the opening 45 minutes of play, went into the half with a 2-0 advantage.
Due to the consistent attacking pressure from the Eagles, PBA struggled to manufacture opportunities to pull within striking distance in the second half, but the squad persevered and got within a goal anyway.
In the 71st minute, the Sailfish were finally able to break through.
Magner utilized a free kick to send a through ball to Williams. The reigning SSC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week volleyed the bouncing ball past the ERAU keeper to bring PBA within one. The goal marked Williams' team-leading sixth tally of the year, as the junior extended her scoring streak to three games.
Palm Beach Atlantic nearly pulled level when Williams fired a try from outside the box that caught the keeper by surprise and clanked off the woodwork in the 81st minute; however, PBA could not find the back of the net again.
As the Sailfish pressed for the tying goal, ERAU iced the contest with an insurance goal in the 84th minute.
PBA placed five of its seven chances on goal in the competition, while Williams recorded four of the team's shots, three on goal. Magner registered the other two tries on frame for the 'Fish.
Women's soccer will return to the pitch on Saturday when they face Eckerd College in St. Petersburg. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
