Garvin's 28-Point Double-Double Leads Sailfish to First SSC Victory

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball picked up their first Sunshine State Conference victory of the season on Wednesday, as they defeated the Lynn Fighting Knights 67-45 inside Rubin Arena.  Jonika Garvin led the way for the Sailfish from start to finish and finished with 28 points and 19 rebounds.  The Sailfish improve to 3-15 on the season and 1-11 in SSC play with the win while Lynn drops to 12-6 overall and 6-6 in league play.

The Sailfish and Fighting Knights both got off to slow starts on the offensive end, as Lynn led just 11-10 at the end of the first quarter.  All of the offense in the opening frame for the 'Fish came from Mina Salhia, who had six points, and Garvin who added four.

The Sailfish offense exploded for 23 points in the second quarter and limited Lynn to just one field goal and seven total points as the 'Fish took a 33-20 lead into the break.  Garvin had a monster second quarter, as she went into the break with 16 points and nine rebounds.

The Fighting Knights made a push to get back into the game early in the third quarter, as they opened the second half on an 11-6 run and trailed by just six points.  Victoria Self answered with a made layup, and then Jonika Garvin scored six straight points, capping the 8-0 run for the 'Fish as they opened up a double-digit lead they would not relinquish.

The Sailfish defense limited Lynn to just 25 percent shooting for the entire game, as the 'Fish were able to shoot 42 percent.  Garvin led the 'Fish were her 28 points and made 10 of her 17 shots in the game.  Self had a nice game as well for the 'Fish, as she scored 12 points and added six rebounds, five assists, and three steals.  Salhia scored nine points off the bench for the 'Fish while Taylor Laabs added six.

The Sailfish will have Saturday off this week and will return to the hardwood on Wednesday, Feb. 6 as they host Tampa at 5:30 p.m. inside Rubin Arena.
