Sailfish Comeback Attempt Falls Short in Miami Shores

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball was down 15 points late in the third quarter on Wednesday, but made a furious comeback attempt, as they cut the Buccaneer lead to just two points with 1:13 to play but were unable to complete the comeback as they fell to Barry 79-74.

PBA was down 42-37 at half, as they went back-and-forth with the Bucs during the opening 20 minutes of play.  PBA shot 40 percent from long range in the half, led by Katie Stang who made three of her five attempts from three-point range.  Jonika Garvin scored a game-high 11 points in the opening half for the Sailfish.

It was Ciara Cumbie who led the comeback charge for the Sailfish in the second half, as the junior scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and pulled down seven rebounds in the half.  Garvin scored 12 of her team-high 21 points in the second half for the Sailfish, and finished with a double-double on the day.

The Sailfish had cut the lead to seven with 1:54 to play in the game before Claudia Charles knocked down a three and Garvin made a layup to cut the lead to two.  Mina Salhia had a layup with under a minute to go to tie the game but it rattled around the rim and unfortunately was no good.  The Buccaneers then iced the game with a three-pointer and a couple of free throws.

Cumbie also finished with a double-double as she finished with 11 points and 13 boards.  Taylor Laabs and Stang finished with nine points each while Salhia added seven off the bench.

Ida Andersson was unstoppable for the Bucs on the night, as she finished with 30 points and made 8-of-11 three pointers in the game.

The Sailfish will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 19 as they will head to Melbourne, Fla. for a game against Florida Tech at 2 p.m.
