Sailfish Win-Streak Snapped, Still Take Series from Moccasins

LAKELAND, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic softball split a doubleheader with Florida Southern on Saturday, falling to the Moccasins 2-0 in the opener, which ended a 23-game winning streak for the Sailfish.  The No. 4 ranked Sailfish rebounded in a big way, defeating the Mocs 8-0 in the finale to win the Sunshine State Conference weekend series.

Florida Southern 2, No. 4 PBA 0

Florida Southern struck first in Saturday's doubleheader, as the first four Moccasins in the batting order picked up hits, scoring two first-inning runs.  The Sailfish escaped further trouble in the inning but trailed 2-0 after one.

The Sailfish got two runners on in the second inning, but were unable to plate any runs and remained down two runs.

Both pitchers dominated from that point on, as neither team was able to score another run, and Florida Southern won by the 2-0 score.  Abbey Busby took her first loss of the season on Saturday, as the freshman threw a six-inning complete game, allowing the two runs on seven hits.

Kristen Beacham went the distance for the Mocs, shutting out the Sailfish and allowing just three hits in the game.  The game is the first time the 'Fish have been shutout this season.

Magnolia West, Maddie Bertisch, and Alexis Guerra picked up the three hits for the Sailfish.

No. 4 PBA 8, Florida Southern 0

PBA took the field following a loss for the first time in SSC play, and responded quickly, as Michaela Hynes singled home West for the first run of the ball game.

The Sailfish broke open the game in the third inning, scoring a run on a Claudia Pizzarelli ground ball, which was followed by a two-run homer by Hynes to extend the lead to 4-0.

The 'Fish scored two more in the fourth inning as West singled home Kaley Hinds and Loren Kilgore.

The Sailfish added runs in the sixth and seventh to go up 8-0.

Ashton Adkins picked up another win in the circle for the Sailfish, pitching all seven innings and improving to 11-1 on the season.  Adkins allowed just two hits in the game while striking out four batters.

West finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBIs, while Hynes finished her day 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

The Sailfish will be back in action next weekend at home against Tampa, as the Sailfish will have a chance to clinch the SSC Championship against the Spartans.
