FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic softball swept a doubleheader with Nova Southeastern on Saturday, taking the series and improving to 30-6 on the season. They won Saturday's games by scores of 7-2 and 4-2.
Game One: No. 8 Palm Beach Atlantic 7, Nova Southeastern 2
The Sharks scored the first run of the game in the third inning, as a two-out RBI single off Abbey Busby put the Sharks on the board.
NSU held their 1-0 lead until the top of the fourth, where Hannah Carlton doubled home Michaela Hynes with one out. Maddie Bertisch plated the next run for the Sailfish as she reached on an error, and the 'Fish scored two more in the inning on a two-out, two-RBI double from catcher Maddie Biggs.
The Sailfish tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 6-2. Carlton tripled home a run in the inning and later scored on a Bertisch RBI ground out.
The Sailfish scored their final run of the game in the seventh inning as Claudia Pizzarelli knocked in Michaela Hynes.
Busby picked up the win in the circle, as the freshman allowed two runs on just five hits, and improved to 13-1 on the season with the win.
Pizzarelli had a great game at the plate, as she finished a perfect 4-for-4 on the day. Biggs, Carlton, and Hynes all had multiple hits in the game, and Hynes and Carlton had two extra-base hits each.
Game Two: No. 8 Palm Beach Atlantic 4, Nova Southeastern 2
The Sailfish picked up right where the left off in the finale of the series, scoring three runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. Pizzarelli and Biggs picked up RBIs for the Sailfish in the inning, as they continued their strong days at the plate.
Jana Wagner (Win, 6-1) got the ball for the Sailfish in the finale, and the senior pitched very well, as she allowed just one run in five innings of work on the day. Wagner allowed just three hits in her outing and struck out two hitters.
Ashton Adkins entered in relief of Wagner in the sixth inning, and allowed a run, but escaped a jam to hold the lead for the Sailfish.
The 'Fish extended their lead in the top of the seventh courtesy of an RBI double from Biggs.
Adkins threw a scoreless seventh to pick up her fourth save of the season.
Magnolia West had a 3-for-5 game in the series finale, while Bertisch was a perfect 3-for-3 in the Sailfish victory.
The SSC Champions will wrap up their regular season on Thursday and Friday with a three-game set against Saint Leo on the road.
