WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball picked up their second win of the season on Saturday, as they defeated Florida National University to close out 2018 at home. The Sailfish trailed big early in Saturday's contest, but finished strong to win the game 66-61.
The Conquistadors got off to a hot start inside Rubin Arena, as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead just 2:01 into the game. The 'Fish then scored the next nine points and took a lead as they got seven straight points from senior Darsan DeShazier. Florida National then went on a 15-2 run the rest of the way in the opening quarter and led 23-11 at the end of one.
The Sailfish offense picked it up offensively in the second quarter, as they got a nice boost from Victoria Self and Katie Stang off the bench. Self had three assists in the first half as Stang made two big three-pointers and the Sailfish took a 34-31 lead into the break.
The Sailfish and Conquistadors went back-and-forth for the entire second half, as neither team was able to gain a comfortable lead and were tied at 61 with under two minutes to play. The Sailfish then got a put-back layup from Ciara Cumbie to give the 'Fish a two-point lead, and three free throws from Jonika Garvin and Stang iced the 66-61 victory for the Sailfish.
The Sailfish had a balanced scoring attack on Saturday, as six players finished with eight or more points. Aniyah Ross had 14 points to lead the way for the 'Fish and added a game-high 15 rebounds. Garvin scored 12 on the day and added five assists. DeShazier was the only other player for the 'Fish in double-figures as she finished with 11 points. Cumbie, Self, and Stang all finished with eight points in the game. Self finished with a team-high six assists for PBA.
The Sailfish will return to action on Jan. 2 as they will travel to Tampa, Fla. to take on the Spartans in a 5:30 p.m. start.
