FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball dropped a non-conference game to Truman State on Monday, as the Sailfish fell to the Bulldogs 80-62 to open up play at the Cruzin' Classic. Jonika Garvin put up 21 points and added seven rebounds for the 'Fish, but they couldn't keep up with the high-powered offense of Truman State on the afternoon.
The Sailfish got off to a good start on the day, as Garvin and fellow senior Mina Salhia scored six early points each as the Sailfish led 14-13 late in the opening quarter. The Bulldogs went on a run to close out the quarter as Truman State led 24-16 after one. Garvin added seven more points in the second quarter but the 'Fish trailed 44-31 at the break.
The Sailfish got eight more points in the second half from Garvin, and four each from Katie Stang and Darsan DeShazier, Victoria Self added six points for the Sailfish, with all of them coming in the second half. The Bulldogs made eight three-pointers in the game while the 'Fish were held to just four. PBA was unable to overcome the halftime deficit and fell 80-62.
Garvin finished with 21 points in total, and added seven rebounds and three steals. Taylor Laabs finished with nine points total, as she shot 4-for-8 from the field.
The Sailfish will be back in action tomorrow, as they will take on No. 3 West Texas A&M to close out play at the Cruizin' Classic. Tip is scheduled for 3:30 tomorrow in Fort Lauderdale.
