Berg's 86th Minute Goal Leads Sailfish to Victory to Conclude 2017 Season

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic University women's soccer team ended their season with a victory Friday evening, defeating the Florida Tech Panthers by a score of 2-1.  The win breaks a four-match losing streak for the Sailfish and takes them to 3-9-1 on the year and 2-7-1 in conference play.  Florida Tech leaves this Sunshine State Conference match with a 7-6-2 record and a 4-4-1 record in league play.

The Sailfish looked strong in the first few minutes of the match, getting a couple of chances before Taylor Frizen earned a penalty after being brought down in the box.  Senior Kayla Fisher put the goal in the top corner to give PBA the lead just minutes into the match.  The goal was Fisher's fifth of the season which leads the Sailfish.

The 'Fish went into the break with the one-goal advantage and continued to hold possession at the beginning of the second half.  The tide began to shift in the Panthers favor and Elin Svensson knotted the score up at one in the 62nd minute.

The game went back and forth from there, until Shannon Berg fired a great shot into the far corner of the net late in the match to give the Sailfish their lead back with just five minutes remaining. Berg's first goal of the season, which was assisted on by Gemma Burrul, could not have come at a better time for PBA as they saw out the final minutes of the match easily and earned the win.

"I am extremely proud of our performance tonight and happy to send our seniors out on a high note," said Sailfish head coach Chris Gnehm.  "Tonight we found the late goal that escaped us most of the season and was the first time in our Division II history we have beaten FIT.  We will use this as a springboard to next year."
