Jerry Saint-Vil Wins It For The Sailfish

Box Score St. Leo, Fla.- The 4th Ranked Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish needed all 90 minutes to keep their undefeated season alive Wednesday night, as the ‘Fish (10-0-1) defeated Saint Leo University (3-4-0) 2-1 at University Field on the campus of Saint Leo University.

The first half was a feisty one between both clubs, as both teams combined for five fouls. Neither team saw the back of the net in the first half, but there were eight combined shots between the two clubs. With the Lions keeping the ‘Fish out of the net, this was only the second time the Sailfish have been held scoreless in a half all season.

As the second half got underway, the ‘Fish knew they had to make the best of their chances, as opportunities would be limited. In the 56th minute, Lucas Kuscevic was fouled inside the 18 yard box, setting up the penalty kick shot for Tom Gavin. Gavin ripped it past the Saint Leo goalkeeper to give the Sailfish the 1-0 lead.

Following the PK, things were quiet until the 79th minute, as a Sailfish penalty just outside the box set up a Saint Leo free kick for the Lion’s Matthias Katerina. Katerina drilled a shot in the upper right side of the net tying things up at University Field, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

With the Lions eying overtime, Jerry Saint-Vil decided to take things into his own hand, as he scored an unassisted goal in the 90th minute to give the Sailfish a 2-1 lead, which would hold for the final 50 seconds of play to give the Sailfish their 10th win on the year.

The win for the Sailfish was their first win over Saint Leo since 2012, and the loss was the Lion’s first home loss since the 2012 campaign as well.

The Sailfish are back in action Saturday, Oct. 10 as they host Eckerd College at the Rinker Athletic Campus. Game time is set for 7 pm.
