KISSIMMEE, Fla.- Needing a win or draw to advance to the NCCAA National Tournament Final Four the Sailfish men’s soccer team completed their mission on Wednesday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Mississippi College at the Austin-Tindall Complex. Senior Daniel Pena provided the game-winning goal just shy of halftime as the ‘Fish knocked off the No. 1-seeded Choctaws to advance.
Palm Beach Atlantic (12-6-3) advances to the NCCAA National Tournament semi-finals along with Bethel (Ind.) College, Shorter (Ga.) University and Lee (Tenn.) University. Stay tuned to PBASailfish.com for information on the team’s next matchup on Friday.
Wednesday’s matchup versus the Choctaws (12-6-2), a NCAA provisional member from the Gulf South Conference, saw the two teams meet for the first time.
A balanced and well played first-half from both sides looked to be a 0-0 stalemate into halftime until sophomore Lucas Coutinho found Pena for a score just inside the right post as the ‘Fish gladly took a 1-0 lead into the break.
From there it was a strong defensive effort for PBA led by junior goalkeeper Steeven Raymont who posted his second straight shutout after earning a 4-0 win on Tuesday over Roberts Wesleyan College.
In the end it was a 14-7 advantage in shots for the Sailfish while each team was whistled for 11 fouls.
