Things to Do While at PBA
At Palm Beach Atlantic University we feel that each student-athlete should be well-rounded and be able to encounter a wide range of activities and experiences throughout their time on campus. With PBA located in arguably one of the most beautiful places in the country, there are a wide variety of activities at a students fingertips that West Palm Beach is proud to call their own.
Below is a basic outline of some of the attractions and amenities that are not only close to PBA’s downtown West Palm Beach campus but are even within walking distance! On-campus activities involving student clubs and areas of residence life to experiencing local shopping, attractions, and of course the beach, there is something for everyone at PBA!
Student Activities/Clubs- Palm Beach Atlantic University prides itself on offering each student the opportunity to interact and get to know their peers in fun experiences throughout the semester. While academics and athletics may take up a majority of your time, we also feel it very important to engage in the full “collegiate experience”. Many of our student-athletes like to test their offseason athletic skills by participating in a thriving Campus Recreation and Intramurals programs that PBA offers. With nearly 20 intramural sports offered each year, students often times make lifelong friends and memories while competing in intramural sports and recreational activities such as camping trips, skiing trips, and canoe trips.
Like many universities, PBA offers yearly activities that are traditions and mainstays for each students collegiate experience. Events such as Welcome Week, Sailfish Cup, Family Weekend, Spring Formal, Coffee House Events, Thursday Night Live, and Homecoming are all events that PBA does each year that draws considerable attendance from current students, alumni, and staff members alike.
Local Attractions- One of the great benefits of being located in a downtown city atmosphere are all the different aspects of entertainment, shopping, art exhibits, music, and theatre that are within walking distance of PBA’s campus. Local hotspots like City Place, The Norton Museum of Art, and The Kravis Center for Performing Arts are all within walking distance or a short drive of PBA.
City Place (Right) is one of the most popular areas for students to venture to when they want to get away from campus from time to time and it located just a few short blocks from campus. Offering practically every aspect of entertainment one might want, City Place features over 40 restaurants, stores, and entertainment options including a 20-screen movie theatre including IMAX, the Harriet Himmel Theater, and an open stage that is used for live performances and concerts on a nightly basis.
The Muvico Movie Theater is one of the finest cinemas in the area while the Harriet Himmel Theater offers an 11,000 square foot facility that is used for music, dance and theatre performances while also serving as a local popular church option for many of PBA’s students. Restaurants such as The Cheesecake Factory, Panera Bread, Saitos Japanese Steakhouse, and Sloan’s Ice Cream shop are just some of the many restaurant options while stores like Barnes and Noble, Victoria’s Secret, Lucky Brand, the Gap, and Banana Republic also align the City Place streets.
The Norton Museum of Art is actually located right beside PBA’s campus and is internationally known for its distinguished permanent collection featuring American Art, Chinese Art, Contemporary Art, European Art, and Photography. The Kravis Center for Performing Arts (Right) is a 100 million dollar facility located adjacent to City Place and about a half-mile from PBA. This center hosts numerous nationally and internationally acclaimed broadway-style shows, musical performers, and comedians throughout the season.
The Beach- With Palm Beach Atlantic conveniently located along the Intercoastal Waterway, there is a short trip over the Palm Beach bridge to be near the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. Gentle breezes, lapping waves and the smell of salty sea air, our South Florida beaches transport you to a tropical paradise of fun in the sun! With our sunny climate and year-round sunshine, you can enjoy sun and surf every day.
Midtown Beach which also more commonly known to PBA students as Flagpole Beach features a large recreation area that is perfect for sun bathing, surfing, swimming, or just taking a walk on the beach. There also are times when a professor will even choose to have class on the beach or other activities such as beach baptism or worship on the beach. Kayak rentals are even available to be used in the Intercoastal Waterway for you and a group of friends to explore on your own!
While being a PBA student-athlete doesn’t afford you enough time to spend all your time at the beach but it does make for a nice place to get away from time to time!
