Bailey Castro Named Head Softball Coach

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic has announced that Bailey Castro will be the new head coach of the Sailfish softball team. Castro has spent the past two seasons as an assistant with the Sailfish after a stellar career on the field with the University of Florida.

Castro helped lead the Sailfish to a 34-14 record in her first season in West Palm Beach and followed that up with a 32-17 record in her second year. The 'Fish posted a .287 batting average in year two led by freshman Maggie West who batted .458 en route to being named a D2CCA All-American Honorable Mention.

"I am thrilled to welcome Bailey Castro to her first college head coaching position," said PBA Director of Athletics Carolyn Stone. "She had tremendous success as both a standout student-athlete for the University of Florida and also as an assistant coach for the Sailfish. She exemplifies our institution's core values and I know she will incorporate those into every aspect of our program. It's truly a great day for Sailfish softball!"

Prior to landing at PBA, Castro was a standout for the University of Florida. She hit 17 home runs as a senior as the Gators won their second straight NCAA National Championship. She set career bests in batting average, at-bats, runs scored, home runs, runs batted in, slugging percentage and on-base percentage as a senior. She was named to the 2014 Women's College World Series All-Tournament team after batting over .500 in the Gators' run to their first championship.

"I am very excited to begin on this journey that God has put in front of me to take over the PBA softball program," said Castro. "The opportunity to help these student-athletes leave the program as better women is such a privilege. The last two season have prepared me to take on this new role. I look forward to a wonderful first year leading the Sailfish softball program."

Not only a great player on the field, Castro graduated from UF with a degree in Sociology. She was a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection while also being named to the SEC Freshman Honor Roll. She was also active in leading Bible studies with her teammates.

A South Florida native, Castro was named the 3A Florida Player of the Year as a senior at American Heritage High School and was a nominee for the MaxPrep National Softball Player of the Year in 2011.

Castro replaces Kimmy Bloemers who led the Sailfish for 11 years.
