MELBOURNE, Fla. – No. 49 Palm Beach Atlantic wrapped up the No. 6 seed in the upcoming Sunshine State Conference Tournament with a 6-3 road win over No. 48 Florida Tech on Saturday afternoon.
The Sailfish (12-8, 2-5 SSC) got off to a good start by picking up two points in doubles play as both Rafael Lenz and Bernardo Ferreira as well as Pato Zarazua and Pietro de Silva came up with victories. For Lenz and Ferreira the 8-1 win over Ricky Corona and J.J. Clark was their team-leading 12th of the year. Zarazua and de Silva took down Aria Canadell and Tjimon Louisy 8-4 to improve to 11-7 on the year.
In singles play Philipp Hoffmann and Ferreira picked up straight sets victories at numbers three and four as the freshman earned their 10th and 11th wins of the year. Hoffmann won 7-5, 6-1 over Gerard Carpinell while Ferreira had less trouble with Majed Alshaikh, winning 6-3, 6-2.
After those two wins the ‘Fish led FIT (12-13, 1-6 SSC) 4-2 and Lenz secured the win for the Sailfish with a come-from-behind three set victory over Corona. Corona took the opening set 7-6 (7-3) before Lenz rebounded to win 6-2, 6-1 to give PBA the all-important fifth point. Thomas Salmon added another win for the ‘Fish at number six, defeating Wade Ball 6-2, 7-6 (17-15).
PBA will head to the SSC Tournament as the No. 6 seed while FIT will go as the No. 7 seed. The Sailfish will take on Lynn University in the quarterfinals on Thursday. This year’s tournament will include eight teams with all matches taking place in Bradenton, Fla.
