WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team opened their three-game series with the Nova Southeastern University Sharks Thursday evening, winning 3-2 at Simpson Field. With the win, the Sailfish are now 26-15 on the year while the Sharks drop to 22-21.
The ‘Fish only picked up seven hits on the evening, but they were all that were needed as three of those seven resulted in runs. Maddie Bertisch (2-for-3) was the only Sailfish with two hits on the night, and she scored two of the three Sailfish runs.
Sailfish starting pitcher Ashton Adkins (W, 15-5) had another solid outing Thursday night. The junior pitched all seven innings and struck out six batters on the night.
The Sharks drew first blood in the top of the first, as Alex Suzuki doubled to left center following the two-out walk to Lexie Storrer that put them on the scoreboard first.
Maddie Biggs and Bertisch equalized things back up for the ‘Fish in the second inning. Bertisch got things going with a double down the left field line and came in to score on a Biggs double to left.
A leadoff double by Claudia Pizzarelli kickstarted the Sailfish offense in the bottom of the third. After advancing to third on a fly out, Alexis Guerra hit a hard ground ball to the Sharks second basemen, and a throw to the plate was just too late as Pizzarelli beat the tag to give the ‘Fish a 2-1 lead.
The ‘Fish added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Shelby Wood single to center that scored Bertisch.
The Sharks scrapped together a two-out single followed by a double to score their second run of the game in the fifth inning, but Adkins would recover, and shut down the Sharks in the sixth and seventh to pick up her 15th win of the year.
The Sailfish and Sharks return to Simpson Field tomorrow, April 14, for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
