WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – It was a night of close misses for the Palm Beach Atlantic women’s tennis team as they nearly pulled off the upset on Wednesday evening, eventually falling to No. 26 Nova Southeastern 5-4 at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center.

PBA (11-10, 2-5 SSC) fell behind 2-1 after doubles despite a near comeback from Valerie Nagovitcina and Taylor Conti at number one. The duo trailed big early before closing the gap to 7-6 against No. 23 Isabella Lowery and Liucelena Perez, but Perez served out the final game for the Sharks to give Nagovitcina and Conti their first loss as a team this season. Also in doubles, Michaela Mignemi and Romina Bolagay improved to 15-3 on the year with an 8-2 victory at number three.

In singles action Mignemi cruised to a 6-1 victory in the first set against Lowery before the NSU number-five player was forced to retire due to injury. Conti and Bolagay each picked up straight-set victories by the identical score of 6-4, 6-3 to pull the ‘Fish even with the Sharks.

The final match on the court came at number six. NSU’s Arina Sharonova took the opening set 7-6 (7-2) but PBA’s Maja Jovic bounced back with a decisive 6-0 win in set two. In the third and final set it was Sharonova who got the best of Jovic, 6-2, as the ‘Fish missed out on the upset victory.

PBA hits the road this Saturday as they head to Lakeland to take on the Mocs of Florida Southern at 1 p.m.
