WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic women’s tennis had an upset in mind on Tuesday afternoon but fell just short, falling to No. 43 Tarleton State 5-4 at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center.
The ‘Fish had a 2-0 lead after the first two doubles matches came off the court but were unable to hold a lead at the number one position, ultimately dropping the point. That, along with number two singles that went into a third-set tiebreak, proved to be the difference in the match as the TexAnns won both matches.
Valerie Nagovitcina and Maja Jovic played together for the second time this year, winning 9-7 at number two doubles while Romina Bolagay and Michaela Mignemi won for the ninth time this year. Bolagay and Mignemi took down Alicia Barbaroux and Tori Simmons 8-4 at number three.
At number one Leoni Polzin and Taylor Conti were within one game of giving the ‘Fish a 3-0 lead in the match but Elena Preadca and Luiza Ferraro-Adas made a comeback to win five straight and take the match, 9-7.
In singles action Conti recovered after losing the first set to Ashleigh Elward 6-0 to take the next two to pick up her sixth singles win of the season. Conti won the second 6-4 before blanking Elward 6-0 in the third. Mignemi was the only other winner on the day for PBA, taking down Simmons 6-1, 6-1 at number five.
The final match to come off the court was number two singles with the team match tied 4-4. TSU’s Preadca won the first set 6-3 but Nagovitcina forced a third with a 7-5 win in the second set. The third was sent to a tiebreak at 6-6 with Preadca coming away with the victory, 7-3.
The ‘Fish hit the court again on Wednesday, hosting the Javelinas of Texas A&M–Kingsville at 3 p.m. at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center.
