Lady Sailfish Runners Gain Valuable Experience in First Race of 2009

MELBOURNE, Fla.- Blessed with a roster of many new runners, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s cross country team made their much-anticipated 2009 debut on Saturday morning as they took on a strong field of runners at the Florida Tech Invitational. Freshman Katherine Harvey led the way for PBA as they finished fifth overall at the invite.
Competing in the women’s 5K, Harvey, a freshman from Wyomissing, Pennsylvania , displayed a strong first effort as she came away with a PBA top time of 22:03.82, good for 33rd in the field.
Following up Harvey in the race were five other runners who cracked the top 50 finishers. Freshmen Faith Warren and Kayla Castro were right behind Harvey in the final standings as they finished 35th and 36th respectively with times of 22:22.27 and 22.26.72. Senior Gina Battista, one of the team’s most gifted and respected leaders, was just behind at 22:47.55 as she finished 39th in the race. Senior Danielle Navish was next in line for the young Fish with a time of 23:33.26, good for 46th place in the event. Berkley Simpson rounded out the top-50 finishers for the Sailfish with a time of 24:42.75 and a 50th place finish.
Other teams competing included the overall winner of the University of Tampa, second-place finisher Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, third place finisher Florida Tech, and fourth-place finisher Saint Leo University.
Florida College and Johnson and Wales also competed as individuals.
The top overall finisher in the race came from FIT runner Sare Trane who finished in 17:59.56.
The Sailfish will now return to practice with their next race and more goals in mind for the young team. PBA will be back in action on Saturday, September 19th when they travel to Gainesville, Florida to participate in the UF Mountain Dew Invitational.
