ARKADELPHIA, Ark.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team completed a Sailfish sweep on Saturday evening as they defeated Ouachita Baptist University by the identical 4-1 score that the PBA men’s team had defeated the Tigers by earlier in the day. This marked as the season opener for the Lady Fish after their previously scheduled match this week versus Eckerd College was rained out.

The Sailfish posted two goals in the first half followed by two more in the second half to earn the season-opening win. Now in his second season and coaching a team full of new faces, coach James Kryger was pleased overall with his team’s efforts.

“Being our first game and such a new team we had to make a lot of adjustments after the first half because we struggled with communication in the back. However, the second half we were able to connect much better between our midfielders and our forwards and that build up led to really all of our goals today,” said Kryger.

“We have some more adjustments we need to make but we will try our best to correct some of those and look forward to our next match on Monday,” continued the Sailfish leader.

One of those 20 or so new faces on the Sailfish roster is freshman Juliet Waller. The 6’0” target forward came away with the first goal of the 2009 season for PBA as she rebounded a shot from five yards out and placed it in the back of the net for a 1-0 Sailfish lead.

The Tigers would respond however on a free kick from around 18 yards out a few minutes later and tie the score at one goal apiece. That would be all that OBU could muster in terms of scoring however as the Fish closed out the match with three unanswered scores.

Veterans Julia Vezina and Angie Kuhn hooked up for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal on Saturday in the first-half as Vezina crossed in a pass to Kuhn who scored close to the net.

After some things were ironed out at halftime, the Fish got back into their rhythm in the second-half when Boca Christian product Jennie Weil found fellow freshman Gabby Lopez who spun around and blasted home her first collegiate goal from about 12 yards out to push the PBA lead to 3-1.

Freshman Ally Raissi finished out the scoring for the Sailfish when she scored off a corner kick that wasn’t cleared and she put home the goal for the 4-1 final advantage.

Freshman keeper Kayla Webb earned the start and her first collegiate victory.

Official game statistics will be posted when they become available.

The Sailfish will return to the pitch weather permitting on Monday when they are scheduled to take on  Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. It will be another PBA soccer double-header with the Fish and Bisons battling at 5 p.m. on the women’s side and approximately 7:30 p.m. for the men’s teams. Both games can be watched through a free online video format. Click on the soccer schedule web pages for links.
