Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla.- The tough losses of late are starting to pile up for the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team. After reaching the 30-win plateau last week, the Fish have now dropped four straight including three in walkoff fashion as Lynn University completed a Monday afternoon sweep of the Sailfish 48 hours after PBA dropped two extra inning affairs to Nova Southeastern University.

Junior Heather Laird (8-9) did an admirable job in the pitcher’s circle for PBA on Monday against the Fighting Knights as she allowed only seven hits and two earned runs while walking three batters and striking out four.

The Knights were down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh inning with the score tied at one run apiece when Kathleen Smith drove a ball deep into right-centerfield. PBA center-fielder Brittany Schneider was shaded to the left-centerfield side and despite a long run she came up empty on the catch as the ball went in and then out of her glove for a Smith triple.

Amber Havnar then stepped in and laced a single that ricocheted off Laird’s leg allowing Smith to score the game-winning run.

LU jumped out to a 1-0 lead to start the game in the bottom of the first inning. Smith produced a one-out single and then moved to second-base on a walk to Rachel Larkins. Mika Tater then stepped in and ripped a single to left-field that saw PBA left-fielder Becca Bolinger deliver a one-hop throw to the plate that catcher Erica Walters couldn’t handle as Smith slid home safely.

PBA tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the third inning as third-baseman Candace Horton smashed a double in the gap that plated Walters who had walked to lead off the inning.

Marianne Johnson (4-10) went the distance for LU who wrapped up their 2009 season with Monday’s action against the Fish. Johnson scattered six hits while working around three walks while striking out one batter.

PBA wraps up their regular season slate with a double-header on Wednesday, April 29th as they hit the road to take on Florida Tech at approximately 3 pm. Both games will be broadcasted live on the Sailfish Radio Network. Pre-game coverage will begin at 2:45 pm.
