LAKE WORTH, Fla.- In dramatic fashion as they seem to always do, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team came away with another dramatic victory on Wednesday evening at PBCC when it took a squeeze bunt from sophomore Abbey Shipman to send the Sailfish a 2-1 victory and a double-header sweep of Lynn University.

After Chelsea Gravini played the offensive hero in PBA’s 3-2 victory in game one, it was time for Shipman to step up and deliver. With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning and the score tied at 1-1, Shipman laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score a sprinting Mari Stokes with the game-winning run. The victory gives PBA a 30-16 record with six regular season games left to play.

The exciting game-winning bunt closed out an exciting night on and off the diamond as the Fish hosted “Senior Night” in honoring lone senior Becca Bolinger in between games of the double-header while also welcoming out the Lady Gators 12 and Under team of the Palm Beach Gardens Youth Athletic Association to take in some collegiate softball.

Junior Ashley Jones earned the starting nod in the pitching circle for PBA in game two after earning the win in game one with a three inning stint out of the bullpen.

Jones showed her usual dominance as she shutout the Fighting Knights (16-29) for six innings before running into trouble in the top of the seventh inning. With PBA leading 1-0, the Knights pushed across the game-tying run with two outs as Andrea Lewis smashed a double just beyond the reach of left-fielder Chris Donovan that plated Rachael Larkins who had doubled to start the inning.

The Fish would not be denied however as they came through with their own rally in the bottom of the inning.

Caitlin Bouschet started the inning by reaching on an error by the LU right-fielder and then moving into scoring position with a wild-pitch. Mari Stokes then followed with a walk before Becca Bolinger grounded into a fielder’s choice. Donovan was next in line for PBA as she drew a walk which set the stage for Shipman’s heroics with the bunt single.

Shipman also scored PBA’s only other run as she led off the sixth inning for PBA with a double and came into score on a wild-pitch by LU pitcher Maryanne Johnson.

Johnson (3-10) was impressive despite taking the loss as the sophomore finished with 6.1 innings of work allowing only three hits and two runs. She walked four and struck out two.

Jones (20-7) allowed only four hits and struck out eight batters including a stretch of five in a row at one point in the ballgame.

Shipman finished 2-for-2 with an RBI, run scored, and a walk in addition to her double and single.

PBA will take on another Sunshine State Conference opponent in their next ballgame as they travel south to Davie, Florida to match up against Nova Southeastern University on Saturday, April 25th. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm with both games being called on the Sailfish Radio Network. Pre-game coverage starts at 12:45 pm.
