WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- After seeing their winning streak snapped against cross town rival Northwood University on Wednesday evening, the Sailfish were eager to get back on track on Saturday afternoon. Hosting yet another in state opponent, the Sailfish were able to get back to their winning ways against Florida Community College of Jacksonville in an up and down match.
The hard fought 5-4 victory over the Stars pushed the overall season record of the Sailfish to 12-7.
Much of the year, the Sailfish have been able to count on a #1 doubles victory from the tandem of Monste Ripoll and Olga Alekseeva. However, on Saturday afternoon, the duo dropped the first match of the afternoon 8-3. Luckily for the Sailfish, the duos of Lina Rubiano/Natalie Aleman and Pamela Artigas/Amber Braaten rose up to the occasion to pick up the slack with wins in the other two doubles matches to give the Sailfish an early 2-1 lead.
In the #1 singles match, Montse Ripoll was able to rebound from the doubles defeat to capture a dominating 6-4, 6-0 victory. In the #3 singles match, Lina Rubiano continued her solid play with a commanding 6-0, 6-3 throttling of Luara Hijbeek.
With the match hanging in the balance, Natalie Aleman had a chance to close out the match in the #4 singles match against Chelsey Lynn of FCCJ. Aleman displayed big time confidence and abilities in the match, as she easily disposed of her opponent and any chance of a Stars comeback. The 6-0, 6-1 straight set victory was by far the most dominating performance of the day and it solidified a 5-4 victory for the Fish.
With the victory, the Sailfish improve to 12-7 overall, and they will be back in action Tuesday, March 31 on the road against Nova Southeastern University at 3:30 pm. Be sure to check www.PbaSailfish.com for all of the match details and highlights.
