MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- After a disappointing extra innings defeat against Barry University in game one of Tuesday night’s double-header, Palm Beach Atlantic University head softball coach Kimmy Bloemers turned to junior right-hander Heather Laird for game two. Not only did Laird respond with a solid outing but the Venice, Florida native tossed a complete-game shutout as PBA earned a 4-0 win in game two.
Laird scattered eight hits while walking three and striking out two batters as she worked herself out of a number of jams while utilizing a solid defensive effort behind her.
The victory earned the Sailfish (28-16) a split with the Bucs (24-13) with the season series now 3-2 in favor of Barry University.
The Sailfish got things going in the first inning as they reached base on a few early walks from BU starter Brianna Smith. Caitlin Bouschet then stepped in and connected for an RBI single to stake Laird and the Sailfish to a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
Palm Beach Atlantic would tack on two more runs in the third inning without the benefit of a hit. Chelsea Gravini was hit by a pitch with one out in the inning and eventually came in to score on a bases-loaded walk to senior Becca Bolinger. Bouschet, who had also walked earlier in the inning, came in to score the other run on another wild pitch from Smith.
The Fish added in one more insurance run in the fourth inning when Schneider was hit by a pitch and then driven home later in the inning on a infield single from Gravini.
Despite some scoring opportunities and a good relief effort from pitcher Jennifer Cuevas, the Bucs would not be able to push a run in against Laird and the Fish. PBA escaped perhaps their stickiest of situations in the bottom of the sixth inning as Bouschet made a diving grab to end the inning on a line-drive up the middle from Brittany Anderson.
Palm Beach Atlantic managed just three hits in the game with Chris Donovan collecting a single in addition to the run-scoring hits by Bouschet and Gravini.
PBA will have the remainder of the week and Easter weekend off from game action as they will next play on Tuesday, April 14th when they travel across town to take on Northwood University at 2 pm for a double-header.
