NCCAA Tennis Championships: PBA Men Fall to North Greenville in Finals

GREER, S.C. – It was a disappointing finish for the second consecutive year for the Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA) men’s tennis team, as they fell once again to North Greenville University (NGU) in the championship match of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tennis Tournament. NGU used a 2-1 advantage in doubles play to throttle their singles matches, giving themselves an ultimate 5-3 victory. A sixth individual match was well underway, but was not deemed necessary of a finish as the Crusaders had clinched their sixth straight NCCAA championship.

PBA’s no. 2 doubles team in Paul Segodo (Benin, Africa/Grace Christian) and Frankie Moulton (Greenacres, Fla./Lake Worth) was the lone winner in doubles play, as they defeated NGU’s Rob Young and Tomas Kurhajec 9-7. Segodo and Moulton won each of their five doubles contests in the NCCAA Tournament.

Sailfish Head Coach Chi Ly’s nos. 1 and 2 singles were solid in their individual matches, as Brock Newton (Roanoke, Va./Indiana Wesleyan University) and Segodo took care of business with 6-1, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-1 victories.

PBA’s middle and lower individual’s fell through though, as Moulton (no. 3) and Lukas Colombo (no. 4) fell in their respective matches. It was left up to the nos. 5 and 6 singles if PBA was to win, but one loss would seal the deal for NGU – and it did.

The Sailfish finish their season at 16-12, earning their second NCCAA runner-up trophies in as many years. Fans can expect to see the PBA men back at it again in 2008, as the team won’t lose anyone to graduation.

DAY TWO RESULTS

GREER, S.C. – The Palm Beach Atlantic (PBA) men’s tennis team used a hard-fought match against Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) semifinals on Wednesday evening to boost themselves into a rematch of last year’s finale with North Greenville University on Thursday. The Sailfish received big wins from their nos. 5 and 6 singles, James Buerkle (Lake Worth, Fla./Belmont Abbey College) and Tyler Dealy (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Force Academy HS), to take the final 5-3 advantage over IWU.

PBA, who hadn’t conceded an individual match all week at the NCCAA Championships, took an early 2-1 lead after doubles play, as Paul Segodo (Benin, Africa/Grace Christian) and Frankie Moulton (Greenacres, Fla./Lake Worth) won an emotional set in a tiebreaker, defeating their opponents from IWU 9-8.

North Greenville has won five consecutive NCCAA titles, and will be seeking their sixth tomorrow against Palm Beach Atlantic. Head Coach Chi Ly hopes that his squad will turn the tables from last year’s finale, when PBA maintained an early 4-2 lead before ultimately losing the match 4-5. Thursday’s championship match is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Greer Tennis Center.

The Sailfish (16-11) were one of two teams in the tournament who had gone undefeated in pool play, as they beat Spring Arbor University 5-0 in a late-morning bout. PBA held the upper hand against Spring Arbor, who was undefeated in pool play at the time as well, in all three doubles matches, prompting the Cougars to default the rest of the match in hopes of storing their energy for a later semifinal contest.

Earlier in the day, the Sailfish women’s team concluded their season after suffering a 2-5 loss to Indiana Wesleyan. PBA’s no. 1 singles player and the 44th-ranked player in the nation, Brooke Nord (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River), defeated the Wildcats’ Kristi Haddad 6-0, 6-0, but it wasn’t enough to rally her team past their opponents. PBA got their other point in the match from the no. 1 doubles match featuring Nord and her partner, Natalie Aleman (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian), as they swept their opponents by an 8-0 margin.

PBA’s women finish their 2007 campaign at 9-11, which is a vast improvement on last year’s 1-16 record.

DAY 1 RECAP & RESULTS

GREER, S.C. – The day’s mission was three-fourths accomplished at the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tennis Championships, as the Palm Beach Atlantic (PBA) teams took three of their four matches. Each of the Sailfish wins were in quick 5-0 contests, while the lone loss was a 0-5 defeat.

The PBA women began their day early with a brisk, 8 a.m. start against North Greenville University. The Crusaders made quick work of PBA though, as three individual contests sent the Sailfish back to the team hotel until their matinee match. The Sailfish women’s squad is one short of the usual six players, causing Head Coach Chi Ly to forfeit the no. 6 singles and the no. 3 doubles matches.

PBA rebounded well in their second match of the day, turning a 0-5 loss into a 5-2 victory at the hands of Oklahoma Wesleyan (OWU). The Sailfish evened the match score at 2-2 with the doubles matches that were actually played and not forfeited Ly’s nos. 1 and 2 singles, Brooke Nord (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) and Natalie Aleman (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian), wasted no time in the individual contests that followed, as each defeated their respective opponents 6-0, 6-0.

Following the initial women’s contest, the men took a step in the right direction, taking a 5-0 match from Cedarville University. PBA’s no. 1 singles player, Brock Newton (Roanoke, Va./Indiana Wesleyan University) took care of business in fine fashion, defeating Cedarville’s Jake Bezeck 6-0, 6-0. After the Sailfish’s three doubles teams each beat their respective opponents, PBA only needed one more individual win to reach the winning plateau of five to take the overall match. Tyler Dealy (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy HS), who has a strong record as the team’s no. 6 singles player this season, beat Zach Rost 6-1, 6-1 to give his team their first victory in the tournament’s pool play.

After cleaning house in doubles competition for the second time in the same day, it was time for PBA’s three other men that hadn’t competed on the individual level in the morning bout to propel the team over Oklahoma Wesleyan. Paul Segodo (Benin, Africa/Grace Christian), James Buerkle (Lake Worth, Fla./Belmont Abbey College) and Lukas Colombo (Santiago, Chile/Georgia Perimeter College) did just that, giving the Sailfish a 2-0 record in pool play. Segodo, who has a team-best 18-6 individual record in 2007, defeated OWU’s Sergio Alava 6-0, 6-0. Buerkle sealed the deal soon thereafter with a 6-3, 6-2 over Jim Rabuck.

Two more days of the NCCAA National Championships still potentially exist, as pool play will wrap up on Wednesday morning followed by an afternoon schedule that includes the tournament’s semifinal contests. The PBA women’s squad will begin with another early morning, as they take on Indiana Wesleyan at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. The Sailfish men will wrap up their pool-play in a bout with Spring Arbor University at 11 a.m. Stay tuned to pba.edu/athletics for continued results from the tournament.
