SAINT AUGUSTINE, Fla.- After a heart-breaking 1-0 loss to Columbus State University in game one of Friday afternoon’s neutral site double-header, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team came through in game two with a victory of their own as they tallied a 4-2 victory. Freshman Erica Walters provided the big-blow with her first career collegiate homerun, a three-run shot in the fourth inning.
Trailing 2-0 entering the top of the fourth and extending their scoreless innings streak on the day to 10 innings, the Sailfish desperately needed a big hit. They got just that from Walters who completed the fourth inning scoring after the Fish got the rally started with two outs and nobody on. Junior Chelsea Gravini got things going with a two-out single followed by a walk to slugging shortstop Caitlin Bouschet. Up next stepped Walters who lifted a long fly-ball to left-centerfield which tipped off the outfielder’s glove and went over the fence to give the Fish their first lead of the day at 3-2.
PBA added an insurance run in the fifth inning as well when Gravini drove home freshman Brittany Schneider on a RBI triple.
Junior Heather Laird (6-7) earned the victory for PBA in the pitcher’s circle as she came through with a solid overall performance. She went 5.1 innings while allowing seven hits and two earned runs while walking three batters and striking out two. Ashley Jones came on for her third save of the season as she logged the final 1.2 innings of relief while allowing no hits and striking out one.
Gravini and Walters each had two hits apiece to lead the Sailfish six-hit attack while Dani Perrotti and freshman Chris Donovan each added in a base-hit of their own.
April Jowers led the way for Columbus State as she finished her evening 3-for-4 with a run scored. No other CSU player had more than one hit.
The Fish take on Flagler College on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 pm. The game will be broadcasted live on the Sailfish Radio Network with Kyle Bloemers providing the play-by-play call.
