WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Sailfish women’s tennis team traveled across town on Wednesday evening to take on rival Northwood University. Riding a seven match winning streak, the Sailfish hoped to continue their hot play against the Seahawks. However, the Seahawks had other ideas and snapped the Sailfish winning streak with a nail-biting 5-4 victory.
In doubles play, the Sailfish continued their hot play, and from the looks of things, they were well on their way to an eighth victory in a row. The tandems of Montse Rippol/Olga Alekseeva and Natalie Aleman/Pamela Artigas defeated Seahawk opponents in tight doubles matches to give the Sailfish a 2-1 lead after doubles play.
In singles play, Montse Ripoll continued to build momentum for the Sailfish with a solid 6-4, 6-2 victory in the #1 singles match. Sophomore and Wellington, Florida native Lina Rubiano followed up Ripoll’s performance with a dominating 6-3, 6-1 victory in the #3 singles match.
Despite a 4-1 deficit, the Seahawks rebounded to win the match on the strength of four straight singles victories to close out the match. With the match on the line, Junior Katie Livesay took on Northwood Senior Tess Svennson in the #6 singles match.
Livesay started the match determined to continue the Sailfish winning streak, as she took a tough first set 6-4. Svennson would flip the fortunes of the first set to win the second set 6-4. With the match on the line and fatigue setting in, the two stars battled to a third set tiebreak. Svennson would take the tiebreak 8-6 to win the third set 7-6 and the match for the Seahawks 5-4.
With the loss, the Sailfish drop to 11-7 on the season, and they will be back in action at home on Saturday against FCCJ. Be sure to check www.PbaSailfish.com for all of the match details and highlights.
