MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University baseball team got their weekend started in the right direction on Friday evening as they pounded St. Thomas University for a 13-5 victory. The Fish registered 16 hits while receiving a strong starting outing from freshman Carlos Hechavarria as the Miami native went six innings to earn his first collegiate win.
Hechavarria tallied two walks and two strikeouts while allowing four runs and six hits in six innings of work. Sophomore Chad Volbert followed with a solid two inning bullpen stint and Martin Suarez finished off the game with a scoreless ninth frame.
PBA jumped ahead with a run in the first but then fell behind as STU plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead entering the middle innings.
The Sailfish would tie and then go ahead of the Bobcats with three runs in the fifth inning followed by two in the seventh inning. The Blue and White busted the game open with six more runs off the STU bullpen in the eighth inning and added another in the ninth inning for good measure.
Senior Nick Norley and junior Tony Livelsberger each produced solid results for the Fish near the top of the order as both were 3-for-4 with each also drawing a pair of walks. Livelsberger scored three times with two doubles while Norley had a pair of doubles to his credit with two runs scored.
Outfielders Michael Kutch and Scott Urbanek each added in a pair of hits in the victory as did leadoff man Vasilios Mila who chipped in a double.
