KISSIMMEE, Fla.- While scoring runs have not exactly been a frequent occurrence for the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team this week at the Rebel Spring Games, having great pitching and defense seems to go a long way. Behind another brilliant outing from junior pitcher Ashley Jones, Palm Beach Atlantic held on for a 1-0 victory on Wednesday afternoon against the likes of Northern Kentucky University.

Jones tallied her 14th win of the season as she logged seven scoreless innings while finishing off the Norse of NKU with a dynamic defensive play of her own. With NKU threatening to tie the game with a runner on third-base and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, NKU head coach Kathy Stewart elected to call a squeeze bunt which was in turn lined back at Jones who caught the out and then fired to third-baseman Abbey Shipman who was covering to double up the runner and end the game with yet another exciting finish.

Jones tallied eight strikeouts while walking just one batter in the game as she along with PBA’s other top junior pitcher Heather Laird, continue to put up solid outings for head coach Kimmy Bloemers.

PBA pushed across their only run of the game off of Northern Kentucky starter Chelsie Roy in the fourth inning. Senior Becca Bolinger came through with an opposite-field double down the left-field line and was then driven home by a RBI single from Shipman.

That would be all the run support Jones would need as she allowed just four hits. Roy allowed six hits to the Sailfish while striking out three and allowing just the one earned run.

Bolinger ripped two hits on the day as did junior Candace Horton who was 2-for-3.

Palm Beach Atlantic is now 20-11 on the season and finished out the Rebel Spring Games with a 5-1 record.
