HILTON HEAD, S.C.- So far so good for the Sailfish women’s tennis team in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The Fish have been nothing but victorious in their opening matches at Hilton Head, and they were able to make it three for three against Rockhurst University on Tuesday evening.
Rockhurst , a NCAA Division II university, came to Hilton Head from Kansas City Missouri. One of the Great Lakes Valley Conference’s better teams, the Hawks gave the Fish all they could handle, but to no avail, as they Sailfish hung on to win another close match 5-4.
In doubles play, the tandem of Montse Rippoll and Olga Alekseeva continued to play well together and got the Fish rolling early with an impressive win. There were doubts about the duo’s abilities and #1 doubles status, as they hammered Erin Bales and Kandice Belanger of Rockhurst 8-2. Despite the solid start from the #1 doubles match, the Sailfish dropped the next two and were trailing 2-1 at the conclusion of doubles play.
As she has done so much throughout the early season, Montse Ripoll continued to victimize opponent’s #1 players. This time it was Kandice Belanger of Rockhurst. Ripoll defeated Belanger early in doubles play and continued to agonize Belanger in single’s play. Ripoll’s dominating 6-1, 6-0 drubbing of Belanger in #1 singles play got the Sailfish back on track, and they never looked back.
Sophomore Lina Rubiano followed up Ripoll’s impressive showing with a dominating performance of her own, as she crushed Hannah Lazenby 6-1, 6-0 in the #3 singles match. Not to be outdone by the outstanding play of their teammates, Sophomore Krishna Domenech and Junior Katie Livesay prevailed in their singles mtaches 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-1 respectively to give Sailfish their seventh victory in their last eight matches.
The Sailfish improve to 7-5 on the season, and they will back in action in Hilton Head tomorrow afternoon against St. John Fischer College. The action will start at noon and be sure to check www.pbasailfish.com for all of the match details and highlights.
