KISSIMMEE, Fla.- A solo homerun from LeMoyne College’s Caitlin O’Neil in the fifth inning was all the offense that would be needed against the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team on Tuesday afternoon as PBA dropped their first game at the Rebel Spring Games after opening up 3-1 in the tournament.
Ashley Jones (13-4) returned to the rubber for the Sailfish and despite another great outing with the only real blemish being the solo homerun from O’Neil, the junior right-hander from Jensen Beach would be charged with her fourth loss of the season. Jones finished with 11 strikeouts and no walks while allowing just two hits over seven innings.
As impressive as Jones was, she may have been matched by Dolphins starter Jenna Vanacore who tossed the 1-0 shutout while registering 11 strikeouts. Vanacore allowed four hits and three walks while holding the Sailfish off the scoreboard for her third win in as many tries. Vanacore tallied a 14-1 record last year as a freshman for the 46-11 Dolphins.
Mari Stokes, Chelsea Gravini, Abbey Shipman, and Becca Bolinger each collected hits in the loss for PBA.
The Sailfish are now 19-11 on the season and will wrap up their stay in Orlando with two final games on Wednesday at the Rebel Spring Games. After back-to-back morning double-headers the Sailfish will take on the late afternoon heat on Wednesday as they take on Northern Kentucky University and the University of Minnesota-Duluth at approximately 3 and 5 p.m. respectively.
