KISSIMMEE, Fla.- Trailing 1-0 to Saint Cloud State University entering the bottom of the ninth inning, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team came away with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday morning at the Rebel Spring Games when sophomore Caitlin Bouschet launched a walk-off, two-run homerun over the center-field fence that sent the slugging shortstop around the bases only to be mobbed by her awaiting teammates.
A 0-0 ballgame after seven innings, the contest moved to extra innings with international rules taking effect thus putting a runner on second-base to start the inning.
The Huskies (11-15) pushed across a run in the top of the ninth inning when a tapper back to PBA pitcher Ashley Jones wasn’t able to be handled cleanly by the usually sure-handed hurler. Jones fought back from there and struck out the final batter of the inning leaving the Sailfish needing a big rally of their own.
Facing starter Kaity Strever, the Sailfish started the inning with Dani Perrotti on second-base who would be moved up to third on a solid sacrifice bunt from Candace Horton. Up next stepped Bouschet who after a few long foul balls smashed the Strever offering over center-field for the game-winning homerun.
Heather Laird earned the starting nod for the Sailfish inside the pitching circle as she responded with another solid outing of five innings while striking out five batters and giving up just four hits. Jones relieved for the final four innings and also registered five strikeouts and collecting the win to improve her overall record to 13-3 on the season.
The Sailfish managed just five hits with Perrotti leading the way with another 2-for-4 performance and a run scored.
