WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Junior Heather Laird did the pitching and freshman Erica Walters delivered the big hit as Palm Beach Atlantic University closed out its Saturday sweep of Flagler College with a 1-0 victory over the Saints at Howard Park. Laird registered 12 strikeouts while going the distance and Walters came through with a run-scoring single in the sixth inning to cap the victory.
Palm Beach Atlantic had a quiet week as far as game action was concerned and will now prepare for their upcoming Spring Break trip to Kissimmee, Florida to take part in the Rebel Spring Games. The Sailfish open up play on Monday morning and will have two games on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
Laird dominated from the on-set and despite having to work out of a few jams, Laird did so many times by registering a big strikeout of a Saints batter in a tough spot.
In all Laird allowed only four hits and three walks while tossing the shutout for her fourth victory of the season.
With Saints right-hander Sam Boatner equaling Laird’s dominance nearly pitch-for-pitch it would take a clutch hit from the Fish if they hoped to earn the victory and a double-header sweep after taking down Flagler 4-1 in the opener.
They got that clutch hit from Walters who lofted a ball over the shortstop’s head in the sixth inning with two outs that sent Caitlin Bouschet sprinting to the plate for what turned out to be the game’s only run. Laird escaped a potential jam in the top of the seventh as Saints catcher Andy Hay connected for a leadoff double over the head of right-fielder Chelsea Gravini; however the strong-armed Gravini hit the cut-off person in Mari Stokes who gunned down Hay trying to stretch her double into a leadoff triple.
Hay finished 2-for-2 in the game while also drawing a walk.
Horton registered the first-hit for the Sailfish while Bolinger and Walter’s RBI single were the only other blemished against Boatner who finished with six strikeouts and three walks as well.
PBA will be back in action on Monday morning at 9 a.m. as they take on Saginaw Valley State University for the first game of the Rebel Spring Games. Games on Monday and Tuesday can be heard live on the Sailfish Radio Network. Pre-game coverage begins at 8:45 a.m. The Sailfish will battle Concordia at 11 a.m.
