KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Coming into Wednesday, Chi Ly’s women’s tennis squad had won three of their last four matches, and they looked to improve to .500 with a victory over Brenau University in Orlando on Wednesday evening. Much like the men’s squad, The Fish have enjoyed traveling to upstate so far this season, as they defeated Brandeis University in Orlando a few weeks ago. However, this trip was not as fruitful, as the Golden Tigers defeated the Fish 6-3.
The match started off brilliantly for the Fish in the #1 doubles match, as sophomore Montse Ripoll and Olga Alekseeva defeated Lyn See Choo and Hannah Thompson in commanding fashion 8-3. The Sailfish rackets would soon cool off in the next two matches, and Brenau would take 16 of the next 18 games to close out doubles play with a 2-1 lead.
Again, the Sailfish started off hot in singles play, as Ripoll left a grueling three set #1 singles match victorious over Brenau’s Pavla Ghilardotti. Ripoll dropped a close first set to Ghilardotti 4-6, but was in control for the rest of the match, as she dominated sets two and three 6-3, 6-2.
Sophomore and Summit Christian product Lina Rubiano was also victorious in the #3 singles match. Rubiano took control of the match with a 6-3 first set victory and hung on to win the second set 7-5 over Jolene Wong of Brenau.
Ultimately, the Golden Tigers would take four out of six singles matches to conquer the Sailfish by a 6-3 score. The Tigers traveled from Gainesville, Georgia and concluded their spring break trip against the Sailfish. Brenau tore their spring break schedule by winning all five of their Orlando matches.
The Sailfish have concluded the first half of their spring schedule and will make a spring break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina to participate in seven matches from March 9-13. Visit www.PbaSailfish.com for all of the match details and highlights.
