DELRAY BEACH, Fla.- After demolishing St. Thomas University 9-0 the day before, the Palm Beach Atlantic women’s tennis team looked to make it four matches in a row against Flagler College on Saturday afternoon. The Sailfish led 2-1 after the doubles matches, but Flagler pulled away in the singles matches to take a 5-3 victory.
The Fish started off the match on fire, as the dynamic tandems of Montse Ripoll/Olga Alekseeva and Lina Rubiano/Natalie Aleman were able to put the Fish ahead with an early 2-0 lead. In a back and forth #1 doubles match, Ripoll and Alekseeva defeated the Saints’ duo of Chelsi De Cuba and Chelsea Taylor 8-6. In the #2 doubles match, Rubiano and Aleman won another tight match 9-7 against Veronica Figueroa and Fernanda Ospina of Flager.
Despite the fast start, the Fish were not able to capitalize in singles play, as the Saints took four of five matches to close out the meet. However, PBA sophomore Montse Ripoll continued her solid play, as she became the arch nemesis of Flager’s De Cuba on Saturday afternoon. Earlier in the day, Ripoll defeated De Cuba in a close #1 doubles match. Ripoll followed up the stellar performance with another nail biting 7-6, 6-4 victory over De Cuba in the #1 singles match.
With the loss, the Fish fall to 4-5 on the season. The Sailfish will be back in action on Wednesday, March 4, as they travel to Gainesville, Georgia to take on Brenau University at 6:00 pm. Visit www.PbaSailfish.com for all of the highlights and match details.
