Short-Handed Lady Sailfish Nearly Topple Saint Leo University on the Road

SAINT LEO, Fla.- Playing for the second time in three days with just six healthy and available players, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team hit the road on Saturday afternoon for their final regular season game of the 2008-2009 season. Trailing by only one point at halftime, the Lady Fish came up just short in taking down the Lions as Saint Leo prevailed 75-68.
Now complete with their regular season competition, the Fish will turn their attention to the upcoming National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament which will be held March 12th-14th on the campus of Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana.
Palm Beach Atlantic trailed 36-35 going into the lockeroom at halftime with their starting backcourt of Lynsey Poole and Hayley Fields still out nursing injuries.
PBA’s Chanell Byrd stepped up big-time as the Mesquite, Texas native poured in a season-highs with 19 points and 13 rebounds while Melissa Perez and Kristine Webb each added in 15 points with Webb just missing out on a double-double with nine boards. Loren Wilkins earned the start in place of Poole and came away with a career-high nine points while playing 29 minutes.
After a 39% shooting mark in the first-half (14-36) the Sailfish came out with a more efficient showing the second-half of play as they landed a 43% (13-27) shooting mark.
The Lions were led by 15 points on five three-pointers from Nichole Tyler who finished 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Marquita Fenn was the only other SLU player in double-figures as she registered 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field.
In total, the Lions shot 33 three-pointers to that of only six attempts from PBA from beyond the arc.
