WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Ending what turned out to be a somewhat frustrating day for the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team on Saturday afternoon at Howard Park, the Barry University softball team came away with a double-header sweep with a game two victory of 7-3. Barry came out on top 8-0 in game one.
Now 11-4 on the season and ranked #4 in the preseason NCAA Division II poll, Barry avenged one of their four losses on the season that came at the hands of the Sailfish back in the BU season opener when the Sailfish took home a 1-0 extra innings victory.
Freshman Chris Donovan (1-1) received the starting pitching nod in the circle for the Sailfish as the Gainesville, Florida product finished four innings before giving way to reliever Heather Laird after running into trouble in the fifth inning. Donovan finished allowing eight hits and five runs while also walking five and striking out two batters.
Laird did a nice job out of the Sailfish bullpen as she allowed five hits but just one earned run as she entered in a tough spot with the bases loaded and nobody out. She finished with a pair of strikeouts.
The two PBA right-handers were opposed by Bucs lefty Brianna Smith who worked in and out of trouble for most of the afternoon but limited the Sailfish to just four hits and three runs (one earned). A freshman from Norco, California, Smith walked three and struck out eight.
The Bucs jumped ahead early again on the Fish with a run in the first inning on an RBI single from Jessica Tabor and then two more runs coming home to score in the second inning on a run-scoring single from Brittany Anderson and a fielder’s choice that didn’t allow the Sailfish to cut a runner off at the plate.
PBA answered with single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings but were unable to ever put together the big inning to break fully into the BU lead.
Now leading 5-3 entering the seventh inning, BU tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning to give Smith some breathing room and eventually came away with the 7-3 win.
Smith improves to 5-1 on the season while Donovan picked up her first loss at now 1-1.
Freshman catcher Erica Walters earned the start behind the plate and produced two hits and a walk while shortstop Caitlin Bouschet added in a run-scoring single. Freshman Mari Stokes delivered a solo homerun for the Fish to get the scoring started in the fourth inning.
Barry was led by the 4-for-4 showing at the plate by centerfielder Amber Durkin who also scored two runs. Shyla Rider walked three times from the leadoff spot and scored a run as well. Joining Durkin at the bottom of the order for BU was Grace Collins and Anderson who combined to go 8-for-11 with four runs scored.
PBA will have most of next week off as they will prepare for St. Thomas University coming to town on Friday, March 6th when the two teams will square off at PBCC beginning at 4 p.m.
