LAKE WORTH, Fla.- After a disappointing showing in game one of Tuesday evenings double-header with Florida Tech, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball squad showed some toughness as they fought their way to a 2-1 game two victory. Junior Ashley Jones was once again dominant inside the pitching circle with a season-high 13 strikeouts as she is now 10-2 on the season.
FIT starter Brianna Barth (1-4) was nearly as effective as Jones in the second-game as she limited the Sailfish to only five hits while working around four walks and registering 10 strikeouts.
Perhaps the only big mistake made by Barth on the night came in the bottom of the second-inning as sophomore Abbey Shipman delivered for the Fish as she laced a single into right-field for a two-run base-hit that scored both Dani Perrotti and Candace Horton who reached earlier on walks. Both Perrotti and Horton each moved up a base earlier on a wild-pitch before the big hit from Shipman.
The Panthers (4-8) came around to score their only run in the top of the third inning as Brooke Fisher laced a leadoff double and eventually came around to score on a single up the middle from Brittany Memoli.
Shipman finished as the only player on the Sailfish squad to register two hits as she was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles while Fisher registered a similar performance with a 2-for-3 showing including her double and run scored.
PBA improves to 14-8 on the season with the double-header spilt against FIT and will now have a few days to rest up before taking on another tough opponent this weekend in Barry University. The Sailfish and Bucs will get together on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. for the first of two games. Both games will be played at Howard Park and will be broadcasted live on the Sailfish Radio Network.
