CLEARWATER, Fla.- Closing out Saturday’s action much the same way she started it, Palm Beach Atlantic University junior right-hander Ashley Jones led the Sailfish to their second victory of the day on Saturday afternoon as they cruised to a 5-0 victory over Florida Tech at the Eckerd College Tournament. All the weekend’s action has taken place at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.
Jones was once again masterful from inside the pitching circle as the junior right-hander tossed seven shutout innings while allowing eight hits, walking three, and striking out a season-high 10 batters.
The Fish (12-6) backed their starting pitcher with two runs in the top of the first and never looked back as they improved to 3-1 at the EC Tournament this weekend.
After Becca Bolinger reached on a one-out error in the first inning, Chelsea Gravini ripped an RBI triple into the right-field corner giving the Fish the early lead. Slugging shortstop Caitlin Bouschet then followed with a single up the middle to give Jones and the Fish an early 2-0 cushion.
Mari Stokes added in a RBI single in the fourth inning while the Fish plated their final two runs for insurance in the top-half of the seventh inning as they received an RBI double from Bouschet and a run-scoring single from Perrotti.
Now 12-6 on the season and 3-1 at the Eckerd College Tournament, the Sailfish move on to Sunday’s action where they will be seeded as one of the top five teams still in contention for the tournament championship.
PBA is scheduled to take on Valdosta State University at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning for the right to play in the championship later in the day. Stay tuned to pbasailfish.com for the full recap of Sunday’s action involving PBA Softball.
