Newton and Segodo Continue Recent Success

Lakeland, Fla.- Coming off a singles championship at the 2007 C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational last week at Rollins College, PBA senior men’s tennis player Brock Newton continues to put up solid rounds as he swept through the first round of the ITA South Regional beginning on Thursday.

Hosted by Florida Southern College, Newton teamed with doubles partner Paul Segodo to open up play with an 8-1 victory over Acker and Sagles from CN. A senior from Roanoke, Virginia, Newton also finished out singles play with a solid showing as well, taking down Hisa Sato from Eckerd College, 6-3, 6-0.

Segodo also earned a first-round singles victory with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Alex Zara from Lynn University.

On the women’s side, sophomores Brooke Nord (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) and Natalie Aleman (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) won their first-round singles matchups in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 over the likes of Amanda Carns of Florida Southern College and Alison Luthman of Saint Leo University respectively. Nord opens the ITA South Regional as the #6-seeded women’s player.

Lina Rubiano also won her first-round singles match as she defeated Taryn Cappadana from CN by a tally of 6-1, 6-2 to move on to second round play.

The ITA South Regional Tournament continues on Friday as the PBA participants look to continue to thrive.
