ORLANDO, Fla.- Hoping to build on the recent momentum of a 5-4 victory over Florida Tech on Monday, Coach Chi Ly traveled with his men’s tennis squad to take on Brandeis University on Thursday afternoon in Orlando. Playing in another tight match, the Fish found themselves tied with Brandeis going into the last match of the evening.
For the Fish, the difference between a win and a loss came down to the final set of the #1 singles match. PBA junior Krasi Atanasov took the first set 6-2, but Steve Nieman of Brandeis University battled back to take set two 3-6. With the match even, Atanasov stepped up and dominated the final set 6-1 to seal the second victory in a row for the Sailfish 5-4.
Before Atanasov’s heroics, senior veterans John Tilton and James Buerkle were able to come away with key singles victories for the Fish. In commanding fashion, Buerkle gave the Fish their first singles victory of the day with a 6-1, 6-3 drubbing of Craig Etman. Tilton followed up Buerkle’s victory with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Mayur Kassetty to put the Fish ahead in the match 4-3.
In doubles play, Atanasov teamed with freshman Luke Bolanos to start the day with an 8-6 victory. Buerkle and freshman Nick Hines followed with an 8-4 victory to give the Fish a 2-0 lead.
With the 5-4 win, the Sailfish even their season record at 3-3. After a week-long layoff, they will be back in action again on February 27 at home against Saint Thomas University at 3:00 pm. Visit www.pbasailfish.com for all the match details.
