Matt Sweesy Named NCAA Independents National Player of the Week

Indianapolis, Ind.- For the second time this fall athletics season, a Palm Beach Atlantic University student athlete has been named a national recipient of the NCAA Independents National Player of the Week. After three Sailfish Volleyball players were honored earlier this year, now senior men’s soccer player Matt Sweesy has also be awarded this honor.

A midfielder from Simpsonville, South Carolina, Sweesy earned the recognition based on helping lead the Sailfish to a win in their only contest during last week’s action in a 4-1 victory over St. Thomas University. He tallied two first-half goals to give the Sailfish an early lead as PBA coasted to a 4-1 victory.

“(Matt) Sweey’s had a great season, and the statistics may not have shown it but I really think this honor has been a continuation of what he’s been producing all year,” said head coach Jose Gomez.

Now 7-3 on the season, PBA continues their ascension up the NCAA regional rankings with a high ranking of number seven earlier this season as they look to find a spot in the NCAA regional later this year.

Their next game is tonight versus Nova Southeastern University as they travel to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for a much anticipated contest versus the Sharks. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Competing as a full-member of the NCAA for the first time in the fall of 2007, the Palm Beach Atlantic University intercollegiate athletic teams are currently competing as an independent institution, meaning they are not eligible for conference recognitions at this point which makes this weekly honor by the NCAA possible.
