WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Leading by one point with 5.5 seconds left, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s basketball team looked poised to come away with a hard-fought victory on Senior Night against Flagler College. Those dreams vanished however as Saints guard D.J. Ferguson received an inbound pass at mid-court, drove to the basket and layed up a shot that bounced off the backboard and found the bottom of the net as the buzzer sounded in the Rubin Arena.

A tight contest throughout, the Sailfish took a 68-67 lead just before the game-winning shot from Ferguson as senior David Powell, one of three PBA seniors honored before the game, sunk one of two free-throws to take the lead.

The Saints utilized a strong interior performance from Ben De La Cruz who was a man among boys at times in the paint as he finished with 25 points on 12-of-14 shooting while also pulling down 13 rebounds. Due in large part to De La Cruz’s high percentage night, the Saints finished with an exceptional 51% shooting mark from the field (28-55).

The Fish witnessed a balanced scoring load as four players reached double-figures including a team-high 13 points from junior guard DeAndre Williams. Coming off the bench, Williams was joined by Hunter Ross and Anthony Gugino as bench players reaching double-digits in points with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Senior Manny Lopez chipped in 10 points for the Sailfish.

Beyond the 25 points from De La Cruz, the Saints also saw nice performances from John Pietkiewicz and 12 points off the bench from Jon Matthews.

The victory pushes Flagler’s mark to 10-13 on the season while PBA drops to 9-16 with the loss.
