MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- After a six game winning streak to start the season, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team was finally defeated on Sunday afternoon as they dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Columbus State University in the first of two games on Sunday in the Barry University/Nova Southeastern Invitational.
Heather Laird (2-1) earned the starting nod for the Sailfish inside the pitching circle and despite a solid outing was tagged for the loss after the Cougars pushed across three runs in the fifth inning as PBA held a 2-0 lead until that point.
CSU did out-hit the Fish in the ballgame by an 11-6 tally and two CSU pitchers, Walsh and Isasi, combined to give the Cougars a solid outing and earn the victory.
The Sailfish appeared early on to look to put the Cougars away as they plated a single run in each of the first two innings. Mari Stokes leadoff the game with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error when Becca Bolinger laid down a sacrifice bunt attempt. Another sacrifice attempt would follow from Chelsea Gravini as the Cougars once again made an error to allow Stokes to score.
In the second inning the Fish would once again get the leadoff batter on via an Abbey Shipman walk and moved up on a solid sacrifice bunt from junior Candace Horton. After Shipman moved up another base on a passed ball by the Cougars catcher she would come around to score on an RBI single from Brittany Schneider
That would be all the offense that PBA would be able to muster however as CSU plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to move ahead for good.
Laird was tagged for 11 hits in six innings of work while registering four strikeouts and just one walk.
