MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- After an exciting win earlier in the day against the likes of the nationally-ranked Barry University, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team was next set to take on Palm Beach County rival Lynn University in the second-game of the day in the BU/NSU Invitational on the campus of Barry University. In another tight game that came down to the wire, PBA held on for a 2-1 victory over the Fighting Knights.

Head coach Kimmy Bloemers decided to go with freshman pitcher Chris Donovan against LU as the Gainesville, Florida native made her collegiate debut inside the circle.

Donovan answered the call well with a solid five inning performance before giving way to junior Heather Laird who closed out the game with her first save of the season. Donovan finished with only allowing four hits, two walks, and one earned run as she earned her first win in a Sailfish uniform. Laird ran into some trouble during her two innings of work but worked around a one-out bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning to earn a hard-fought save.

The Sailfish received all the offensive fire-power they would need from junior center-fielder Chelsea Gravini as she provided RBI singles in both the third and fifth innings to stake PBA to a 2-0 lead.

The Knights would cut the Sailfish lead in half in the bottom of the fifth inning as Tiffany Munz delivered a leadoff double and came around to score on a RBI single from Meghan Osbourne.

While still looking to hit their stride from an offensive standpoint as the Sailfish managed just five total hits against LU starting pitcher Amber Havnar (0-1) but their strong pitching and excellent defense continue to be effective enough for PBA to begin with an impressive 4-0 start to the 2009 season.

In particular, the early defensive showings of left-fielder Becca Bolinger as well as the strong infield play of Abbey Shipman, Caitlin Bouschet, Mari Stokes, and Dani Perrotti continue to give the PBA pitchers all the support they need behind them.

The Sailfish will look to stay unbeaten on Saturday, February 7th as they take on two more tough opponents in the likes of Columbus State University at 12:15 p.m. before squaring off against the University of North Carolina-Pembroke at around a 7 p.m. start time.

The UNCP game will be aired live on the Sailfish Radio Network with pregame coverage slated for 6:45 p.m.
