AVE MARIA, Fla.- After a tough home loss on Tuesday night to Northwood University, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team got back on track Thursday night as they traveled to Ave Maria University where they cruised to a 73-48 victory. Senior Melissa Perez totaled a career-high 24 points to lead the way as PBA improves to 7-14 on the year.
The Sailfish swept the season series with Ave Maria after taking down the Gyrenes at the Rubin Arena back earlier this month. The loss dropped AMU to 3-14 on the season, their first as a collegiate women’s basketball program.
Having sometimes struggled with their outside shooting this season, the Sailfish had no problems on Thursday as they finished 8-of-15 from beyond the arc (53%) while shooting 28-of-72 from the field overall (39%).
Perez led all scorers as the Miami, Florida native finished 9-of-14 from the field while hitting a spectacular 4-of-6 from three-point land. A player who gives her all on every play, Perez played 33 minutes while chipping in six rebounds, five steals, and three assists.
Joining Perez in double-figures was fellow senior Chanell Byrd as she put together a solid all-around night with 12 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Junior Kristine Webb posted 10 points to round out PBA’s double-digit scorers.
Freshman Lynsey Poole added in eight points while finishing with a PBA record 12 steals in the contest. Poole added in seven assists and four rebounds in the victory.
The Sailfish forced AMU into 30 turnovers on the night while holding the Gyrenes to 32% from the field.
AMU was paced by three players in double-figures in Erica Pfab and Miriam Loveland with 14 points each while Saira Morgan chipped in 12 points. Loveland and Morgan both posted double-doubles with 11 and 12 rebounds respectively.
The Sailfish will hit the road for their next contest as they will take on St. Thomas University on Tuesday, February 3rd in Miami Gardens. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
