WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- After a solid victory on Friday evening in the first day of the Northwood University Classic against Malone University, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s hoops team was back at it again on Saturday as they took on Emmanuel College (Mass.). Trailing for nearly the entire game, the Sailfish were unable to connect on a buzzer-beater as EC escaped with a 74-72 win.

A tough NCAA Division III opponent, EC utilized a superior shooting effort to earn the victory over the Fish as junior Chris Joseph’s fade-away jumper clanked off the rim as the buzzer sounded, giving EC the much deserved victory.

Taking a break away from their very challenging NCAA Division II schedule, Sailfish head coach Terry Primm used nearly his entire bench at some points in the game as he awarded a number of younger players with some court time. In total 13 players saw time against the Saints with a number contributing their first points of the season.

The Saints were paced by speedy guard Rob Williams-Hinton who poured in a team-high 27 points including 23 points in the first-half of play. Williams-Hinton finished 9-of-16 from the field including a solid 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.

PBA was once again led by the strong play of senior guard David Powell who led all Sailfish scorers with 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting including 5-of-10 from downtown. Following Powell’s performance was a solid overall showing from Joseph who added in 19 points while making 13 trips to the free-throw line and coming away with nine points from the charity stripe. Joseph also paced the squad with eight rebounds and three steals.

Senior Manny Lopez added in 10 points including 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.

Beyond Williams-Huton’s team-leading total, the Saints also received a good showing from forward Mack Spellman who posted 16 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double.

The Saints won the battle on the boards as they pulled down 42 rebounds compared to that of 34 for the Fish. EC also finished with a 51% overall shooting percentage while PBA came away with a 37% mark.

Powell was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 20 points for the two game NU Classic.

After a long break for the Christmas holiday, the Sailfish will now once again have some time to rest up as they will wait a week for their next game action. They will travel to St. Augustine, Florida as they will take on Flagler College on Saturday, January 10th. The Sailfish women’s team will suit up first against Flagler at 5 pm followed by a 7 pm matchup for the men’s teams.
