WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Beginning a busy week of basketball at the Rubin Arena, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team jumped out to a big start on Monday night against the University of West Florida only to see the Lady Argos chip away at the Sailfish lead and hold on from a late charge to earn a 62-57 victory.
PBA (2-10) jumped out to a quick 16-3 lead as the Argos were unable to connect with their shots in the early going. By halftime the Argos (5-7) returned to the lockeroom nursing a 29-28 lead as they rebounded from their tough start.
Interestingly enough, the Argos were solid from beyond the arc in the first-half as they registered a solid 55% (6-11) shooting mark while shooting just 4-of-21 from inside the arc. PBA was held to a 36% (12-33) overall shooting mark in the first-half.
Down the stretch it would be the hard-fought efforts of the Sailfish that kept the game close down to the final play. West Florida led by as many as 14 points in the second-half however a relentless PBA pressure in the final minutes forced a number of turnovers.
The Fish were led by a 16 point performance from senior guard Melissa Perez who hit 4-of-8 shots from the field and 7-of-9 attempts from the charity stripe. Fellow senior Chanell Byrd added in 10 points for her second-consecutive double-figures scoring night.
Freshman forward Selethia Jackson along with junior center Kristine Webb also put together strong nights on the glass with Jackson pulling down 11 boards and Webb grabbing 11 to go along with nine points.
The Argos were paced by 16 points from Victoria Hunt and 15 points from guard Amy Drake. Drake proved lethal at times from beyond the arc as she connected on 5-of-8 attempts from behind the three-point line.
Jessica Young added in 11 points and 11 rebounds while registering four blocks.
PBA will be back in action on Wednesday, December 17th as they will take on Central Missouri University at 7 pm in the Rubin Arena.
