WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Combine a superior offensive effort from the University of Tampa as well as an out-of-sync Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s basketball squad and you have a lopsided Spartans victory on Saturday at the Rubin Arena. The visiting Spartans jumped on top early and never looked back as they downed the Fish by a shocking 73-41 final tally.
Entering the game with a 5-2 record against Sunshine State Conference opponents, the Sailfish looked like a different team on Saturday as the shots were simply just not falling for the usually deep-threat Fish. PBA combined to just 5-of-29 field-goals in the first half to the tune of a 17% shooting percentage while UT connected for a 53% shooting mark (18-34). UT led 42-21 at the break.
In the second-half, the Fish would once again come out struggling to hit their scoring opportunities while UT slowed down their approach and rode out their victory.
PBA was led by junior point guard Chris Joseph who led the Fish with 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals in 35 minutes on the floor.
The Sailfish usually rely on a balanced scoring attack with seniors David Powell and Manny Lopez along with sophomore Hunter Ross all averaging double-figures. The usually dynamic scoring trio who entering today were averaging 44 points as a whole, scored 13 points today on 2-of-26 shooting.
The Spartans were led on the afternoon by Anthony Labruno with a game-high 16 points on 7-of-9 from the field while forward Fred Woods added in 14 points on 6-of-7 from the floor.
While the Fish may not have had their best effort they certainly have a squad capable of a quick rebound as they will face #17-ranked Florida Southern College on Saturday, December 13th at 4 pm.
