In the Life of a Fish: Mark Cabrera
December 2, 2008
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Mark Cabrera shares with readers online as he and his teammates prepare for their upcoming trip to Kissimmee, Florida for the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) men's soccer National Championship. The team travels the three hours north later today in preperation for what they hope will be an exciting experience.
The journey begins today… On this day, we head north into the frozen tundra that is Kissimmee. Ok, it’s only 60 degrees but still, we are from South Florida! I can only imagine what the teams at Nationals will think when we show up to our games wearing 4 layers of clothes and drinking warm water out of thermoses. I will do my best to make a few posts throughout the tournament because I feel like this is the time of year that we remember the most.
My favorite memories from tournaments past are directly related to the choice of music that we play on the forty-five minutes trips from the hotel to the field. (It’s always longer on the way back because coach has to stop at Subway to feed us dinner.) My freshman year we heard, “Lips of an Angel”, close to 300 times. I heard it so many times that at the conclusion of the trip, I could actually compose the whole song, note for note on a piece of scratch paper. I can’t even read music! Last year we all watched Jerris, Dodge, and D-boy dance their hearts out as we sang every word to “Sweetest Girl”. Rico butchered the lyrics, again, “tricks on the track like a bicycle”….
On the real, keep us in your prayers as we pursue our goal of a national championship. Pray that we get some sleep as we stress about school and share rooms with guys that snore like it’s their job. In closing, “What would Michael Phelps do?”
